The Type K - the Car that Put Renault on the Map...

At the turn of the 20th century, there was a huge vogue for city-to-city races.

The Renault brothers were experienced racers, but they won their first major success - the 1902 Paris-Vienna race - with the Type K.

It was a tough race, crossing the Alps via the Arlberg Pass, over treachorous mountainous roads, and it was biting cold at 1,500m above sea level.

Renault were facing fierce competition from Henry Farman's Panhard and Count Zborowksi's Mercedes.

But in the end the Type K's light weight

paid dividends on the steep mountain roads, and Marcel Renault was the first to cross the line. His average speed was an amazing 62.5 kph!

Renault were now firmly on the map in all race categories.
